Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk said on Friday that he is activating the satellite internet service Starlink amid the internet shutdown in Iran over an anti-hijab demonstration. Musk has given this information on the tweet of a senior US official. Responding to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s tweet, Musk said that he is activating Starlink in Iran.
The US government on Friday issued guidelines on expanding internet services for Iranians, despite US sanctions on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. According to Reuters, the US official told that there is no need to get a license for Starlink. It will be commercial, for which they will need to write to the Treasury.
The US Department of Defense later stated that any person who meets the criteria set forth in this general license may carry on its activities without requesting additional permission. However, Elon Musk could not be reached for comment on Starlink’s approval to operate in Iran.
Many protesters have died
